Many neurodivergent people develop particularly strong interests in certain topics. These are often called special interests.
A special interest might be:
- trains or vehicles
- IT, computers or media
- games or technology
- numbers, maps or facts about a particular subject
- specific books or films
When neurodivergent people engage with a special interest, they may be able to focus on it deeply and for long periods of time. They often develop an extraordinary depth of knowledge and learn an incredible amount about the things that fascinate them. Special interests can bring joy, calm and a sense of security.
They can help the nervous system regulate, recover and regain energy.
From the outside, it may sometimes seem as though someone is spending too much time or attention on one particular subject.
But for many neurodivergent people, special interests are an important source of energy, knowledge and enthusiasm.
Sometimes we only see the intense focus –
but not the passion and source of strength behind it.
